treatment

The treatment of hip and knee related pain and injury depends on the cause.

For exercise-related pain, rest is usually enough to allow the area to heal. This type of pain is typically gone within a few days.

If you have arthritis, your doctor can prescribe medications to relieve pain and stiffness.  An orthopaedic surgeon can offer further advice and surgical or non-surgical options for correction and/or pain management.

For minor injuries, treatment typically involves bed rest and medications to relieve swelling and pain.

For more serious problems, (e.g. chronic pain, fractures, irregularities in the joint, and moderate/severe injuries), surgical intervention may be needed to repair or replace the joint. In hip or knee replacement surgery, an orthopaedic surgeon replaces the damaged joint with an artificial one.
